AS a livestock farmer I was pleased when the government introduced legislation to stop the use of fireworks after midnight on November 5. However, could there not also be a restriction on the start time for fireworks?
Living in the heart of a village I am well aware that some people let off fireworks in their gardens during the evening so I always endeavour to graze my cattle and sheep away from here at this time.
I also make sure that my working dogs are shut in by 7pm as I know they will be frightened by the noises.
Unfortunately, this year several very loud fireworks were let off at about 6.15pm before the dogs had been shut in. Two of the dogs came racing straight to me but the third disappeared. Later that night she was found lying dead by the side of the old A30 road, obviously having been hit by a passing car.
This event has caused much upset to my family and me, probably also to the driver of the car that killed her. She was a much valued and key part of my farm?s workforce, a highly skilled, trained sheep and cattle dog, but more importantly she was also a loyal and constant companion to me and in that respect can never be replaced.
I would not want to spoil anyone?s fun on Bonfire Night but can I ask, please, that everybody consider what affect their actions may have on others?
