NORTH Tawton firefighters were called out to a cooker fire in Exeter Street, North Tawton, on Monday afternoon, where an elderly man had to be given oxygen after suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.

An Okehampton fire appliance also attended the scene at around 4.30pm on Monday. The damage was confined to the kitchen area of the property.

l On Saturday afternoon, North Tawton crew was called out to a hedge fire at Spreyton. Two hosereels were used to extinguish the blaze.

Later that evening, the North Tawton crew tackled a chimney fire at Winkleigh.

l Any organisations in the North Tawton, Winkleigh or Bow area who would like to visit the new fire station or have a talk on fire prevention and safety during the winter are asked to come forward now.
