FIREFIGHTERS prevented a blaze spreading to the main body of Tavistock Hospital after fire broke out in the kitchen store in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The fire, which is believed to have been caused by an electrical problem, was attended by two fire crews from Tavistock and firefighters from Yelverton.
Tavistock station officer Tony Clark said a section of the roof of the building had to be cut away and supplies had to be isolated.
?Fortunately we did not have to evacuate the hospital because the fire was in a lean-to building on the lower ground level and the wards are on the first level of the main building,? he said.
?Although some smoke got into the main hospital, the fire doors helped prevent the fire from spreading.?
Fire crews were at the scene for almost four hours.
