AN ARTICULATED lorry carrying a load of potatoes caught fire on the eastbound carriageway of the A30 between Stowford Cross and Sourton Cross last Friday evening. Two fire appliances from Okehampton were joined by two from Launceston to tackle the fire which resulted in 60% of the trailer being damaged. Crews used two breathing apparatus sets and two hose reels to put out the fire. Firefighters were at the scene for several hours as they tried to offload the lorry and extinguish the fire within the trailer. On Monday, Okehampton firefighters tackled a grass fire on the edge of Bridestowe, which broke out just after noon. Two fire appliances from Okehampton then went to Horrabridge Farm at Northlew, where 130 large bales of hay had overheated and caught fire. The crews extinguished the fire and stayed at the scene until 7pm.
