FIRE and rescue services including a helicopter were called to reports of a gorse fire at South Hessary Tor, Princetown on Sunday.

Crews from Princetown and Yelverton attended the incident but the fire was on two fronts, so two appliances from Tavistock were mobilised to the scene to provide extra manpower.

One square kilometre of moorland was destroyed by the fire.

Firefighters used beaters and supplied water for the Dartmoor national rangers fogging unit.

A search and rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor and USAR team from the fire service attended the incident to check the location of campers in relation to the fire.
