TAVISTOCK College students took on last year's national finalists in the schools version of University Challenge.
The college was the only comprehensive school to compete in the event, taking ten students to Exeter school for the Schools' Challenge.
Teachers Sally Hubbard, Keith Bowden and Ann Morgan accompanied the college's two teams, and watched as the first team knocked out Exeter School in the first round before playing last year's finalists, Devonport High School for Boys.
Mrs Morgan said: 'Jed Coiley, Flo Rodgers, Tom Rodgers and Ed Longden lost by just three questions, which was purely down to the opposition's lightning quick buzzer fingers.
'Our other team, made up of Jack Shepherd, Adam Browner, Annabel Longden and Rosie Fillan, beat King's College, Taunton in round one and then battled against Torquay Boys Grammar in the second round.'
Jack Coiley and Josh Stephens travelled as Tavistock's reserves but did not get a chance to play.
Mrs Morgan added: 'I would like to congratulate each of these students for making Tavistock College very proud.'
The design technology department of the college will help the students to progress even further next year, by making the contestants buzzers to practice with.
