THE company which manages leisure facilities at Roadford Lake, where a man suffered a fatal electric shock almost two years ago, was last week fined more than £30,000 for offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act. North Devon Magistrates fined South West Lakes Limited £12,000 for failing to ensure users of the facilities at Roadford were not exposed to health and safety risks. The company was also fined £10,000 for failing to have a suitable risk assessment in place, plus £10,000 for failing to review and change a risk assessment made in 2000. The magistrates were told that Peter Holt, 50, from Bodmin, died in hospital in July 2003 after suffering a massive electric shock when the metal mast of his boat hit 11,000-volt overhead power cables. The court heard that teenager Ryan Woodbridge of Launceston, who was with Mr Holt, was also injured, as was 72-year-old Sheila Cole of St Austell, who went to help Mr Holt. The prosecution, on behalf of Torridge District Council, said the matter was made even more serious due to the fact that a member of staff had had a similar accident the year before, though with less serious consequences. Matthew Boyer, defending, admitted the accident was a tragedy for which South West Lakes Limited had expressed profound regret. He told the court that since the incident, the necessary steps had been taken to ensure no similar accidents could take place again. The company was also ordered to pay costs of £14,285.
