YELVERTON Tennis Club's autumn tournament, spread over two weeks in September, came to an end on a sunny Saturday when there were some excellent final matches for spectators to enjoy.

In the mixed doubles final, John Marshall and Mary Downey finally won a long, closely fought match against the mother and son partnership of Fiona and Chris Spreadbury, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

This match provided excellent tennis for the spectators.

Fiona and Mary were also involved in the ladies' doubles final. Fiona, partnering Lyn Jones, won 6-0, 6-1 against Mary and Ann Tucker, but the match was closer than the score suggests, with some long rallies.

In the men's doubles, club chairman John Marshall and Colin Tattersall were beaten by Peter Smith and Tony Leonard in two sets.

Colin, a new member of the club and new to tennis this year, played well in his first tournament.

In the plate matches Ann Short and Wendy Sharland had an enjoyable hard-hitting game against the mother and daughter pairing of Karen and Emily Gasche, Ann and Wendy winning 6-4, 6-1.

In the mixed doubles plate Wendy Bolingbroke and Tim Shobrook were the winners against mother and son Clare and Ed Taylor.

Thanks go to Wendy Bolingbroke for organising the tournament and the evening supper at the Drake Manor in Buckland.

The summer league team's supper will be held at the Whitchurch Inn on October 14, but tennis continues throughout the winter on the all-weather courts at Yelverton, where new members are welcome.
