Bude U11/12s 14

North Okes U11s 33

WITH some key players missing through illness and injury, it looked like the visitors had their work cut out against a big powerful Bude side.

Playing up the slope and into the wind the North Okes were constantly defending in the first half. The whole team tackled well, with Cameron Rickerby, Luke Miller, Bill Sharpe and particularly Kevin Dennis putting in some excellent hits, but the home side kept up the attack, and were rewarded with two well taken converted tries to put them 14-0 ahead.

The forwards, Chris Reynolds, Andrew Fishliegh, Merrick Kirby, Tom Dean and James Speak, started to dominate loose play.

Fishliegh, who had another magnificent game, made a surging run through the Bude pack but was held up short, the rest of the North/Okes pack drove him over for a thoroughly deserved first try of the season, converted by Andrew North, to leave the score 14-7 at the interval.

The second half saw quick thinking by North who received the ball from a tap penalty and crashed over to level the scores.

North went over for another try before some first class handling saw James Ewen score in the corner. The final try came from a tremendous solo effort by Darcy Heard who weaved his way towards the line. The home side managed to hold him up, but determination and the rest of the pack forced him over to round off a good win.

Teignmouth U14s 19

Tavistock U14s 7

THE Tavistock squad of 20 players put in the performance of the season and with a little luck could have won this gripping match.

It only took Teignmouth ten minutes to score a try under the posts, duly converted.

Somehow, though, a spark was ignited and the team played out of their skins. The forwards, led by a superb back row of Edwards, Friend and Lawson, were always first to the breakdown. The front five of Walker, Shutler, Hickman/Vella, Jenns/White and Frost found a cohesion that helped them win strikes against the head.

The new half-back pairing of Thompson and Campbell were creative in attack and showed good handling skills; Ewing and Whiteford tackled as though their lives depended on it and the back three of Burton, Hannant/Gaye and Harris dealt with everything thrown at them.

Tavistock took possession deep into Teignmouth territory and from a maul Shutler broke free, evaded four tacklers and touched down for a great try. Campbell converted.

The score remained at seven apiece for almost 40 minutes. An excellent series of attacks brought Teignmouth their second try and a third came in the last few minutes.
