THE British Trust for Conservation Volunteers will be assisting the Brentor Commons Association with the task of fencing around four old mineshafts on Bowden Common. This task will be carried out on Saturday, June 14 and Saturday, June 21 in order to make the area safer for the public to enjoy the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Volunteers, mainly young people giving up their personal time and from the West Devon and Plymouth area, will clear scrub and erect the fences. Permission for this task was given by the Secretary of State for the Environment as the area is common land. The common was collectively purchased four years ago by local people who were interested in restoring the land which is overgrown by bracken and gorse. For more information on the commons and ongoing work, contact Michael Whitfield, secretary of the BCA on brentorcommons@ btinternet.com or Emily Cannon, BTCV youth volunteer development manager, on 01752 519780.
