Heather Fell, Olympic modern pentathlete silver medalist, writes about her life 'on and off' the track.
I'VE survived the first week out here in Font Romeu, just! We were given a pleasant, gradual acclimatisation period for the first half of the week before three days of 'crash' training; all I can say is we survived and certainly earned our Sunday off.
It is obviously the fashionable place to be right now with several world-class middle and long distance runners here. Luckily Paula Radcliffe had finished her session on the track before we had to start ours; I'm pretty sure her cool down pace would be faster than my race pace!
If you can remember back to the end of April it was the deadline for Olympic ticket applications, I managed to leave this to the last possible minute and submitted my choices just before midnight. Afterwards I was a little concerned I might end up with tickets to clashing events as I forgot to check the timetable when rushing through the process. I shouldn't have worried; I ended up with nothing, along with so many others. Yet I was given hope by the second chance sales, which apparently were reserved just for those of us who had no luck the first time. It was on a first come first served basis starting early Friday morning so I studied what little options there were remaining and set my alarm. Unfortunately I wasn't the only one keen to log on first and the website struggled, therefore I had to wait until after training. Yes a handful of tickets remained but I have to admit that I struggle to get excited about football as an Olympic sport. There have been rumours that more tickets are to be released next year but I'm not banking on it; so its back to training to give myself the best possible chance of being there on the other side!
