I've now left behind the tranquillity of the Malaysian Islands in exchange for the manic hustle and bustle of New Delhi in India.
The contrast couldn't be greater, chilling in a hammock or diving along the reefs seems rather more than a few days ago. On landing in India the overwhelming security presence and swarms of volunteers, made for a far from normal passage through immigration. Having eventually got some sense from one of the Commonwealth Games helpers, I was released from the airport.
The games are now well underway, with a positive start for England and more importantly for our local athletes. I was lucky to get the chance to speak to shooter Georgina Geikie - aka Gorgs - from Oke at a British High Commission reception. Even though the High Commissioner spoke of the 'rollercoaster ride' the athletes have experienced getting here, Gorgs seemed relaxed yet keen to start. I'm confident in her but I'll still have my fingers crossed. Although the predicted problems with the facilities and safety luckily don't seem to be an issue from the athlete's perspectives, there are still some less controllable issues. For example Michaela Breeze, a weightlifter from Ivybridge, while at the reception was bitten by a mosquito through her tracksuit trousers! I'm doing my best to pick my food carefully, diligently cleaning my hands and applying liberal amounts of insect repellent and suncream.
In between my time at the venues I've been incredibly lucky to see a few sites including the spectacular Taj Mahal. It involved a rather eye opening car journey. We found ourselves sharing the road with various modes of transport — a few loads being pulled by horses, mules or cows, bicycles towing trailers and even a camel. That's not including the feral monkeys, dogs, boars and holy cows! I must not forget the ubiquitous auto rickshaw (the phat-phats) designed to transport one or two passengers, plus the driver; so you can imagine my amazement when I counted 15 people happily cruising down the dual carriageway.
