THIS year?s Teignton Fayre held in the village of Drewsteignton in June ? supported by an auction of gifts and promises in April and a toy duck race down the River Teign on Easter Sunday ? has been the most successful so far.

More than £4,000 was raised for local good causes, boosting the total raised since the year 2000, to more than £14,000, despite a gap in the celebrations because of the foot and mouth crisis.

On Wednesday week, an open meeting was held in the village church rooms to seek feedback from villagers on this year?s event and to canvas support and ideas for future fayres.

Cheques were also presented to the organisations which had been successful in their application for funding.

This year?s beneficiaries include: BBC Radio Devon?s Chestnut Appeal; Holy Trinity Church, Drewsteignton; Devon Air Ambulance; Whiddon Down Village Hall; Drewsteignton Toddlers? Group; Cheriton Bishop play-scheme; Cheriton Bishop School; Chagford C of E Primary School; Chagford Pre-School Group and Drewsteington Cub Pack.

Collecting the cheque on behalf of BBC Radio Devon?s Chestnut Appeal was radio personality Alec Benford.

This year?s Teignton Fayre was the fourth since it was revived to develop a community spirit and celebrate the millennium year.
