KELLY College sixth form physics group have just returned from a visit to CERN — the European Organization for Nuclear Research, located in both Switzerland and France.

On the first day of their three day trip they visited ISO's (International Organisation for Standardisation) central building situated in Geneva where they were given presentations about what ISO is, what they do and the importance of their work in developing and publishing international standards.

On the second day the Kelly students visited CERN, where scientists are looking for the mysterious particles created at the beginning of time — particles such as the Higgs Boson, often known as the 'God' particle, that will explain gravity.

The students were shown around many different areas of CERN including various particle accelerators, the Microcosm exhibition, the ATLAS detector and the gigantic computer centre.
