YELVERTON man Steve Murray and his girlfriend Candy Stanton have signed up for a challenge that will take them 10,000 miles across Europe and parts of Asia.

The couple will take part in this year's Mongol Rally, which starts later this month, leaving from Goodwood.

They expect to take six weeks to reach Mongolia in a 2001, 998cc Nissan Micra — not a vehicle usually seen crossing deserts and mountains.

Steve, 29, said: 'We expect to break down and get lost a lot but we will use local amenities and garages to get back on track.'

Steve will be embarking on a craft engineering course at Kingston University after his summer adventure.

The couple are regular travellers and have named their team 'Car go far go'.

At the end of the challenge the car will be given to charity or sold and the money will go to charity.

They are raising money for three charities. The first £1,000 they raise will go towards Christina Noble Children's Foundation and Mercy Corps, charities working within Mongolia striving towards improving rural communities by building schools and establishing support centres to try and combat alcohol abuse among youngsters. The rest of the money will be donated to UK-based charity the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
