CASTLE Drogo will provide the ideal back drop for its fairytales and legends grand summer fete on Saturday June 26 and Sunday June 27, between 11am and 5pm.
Giant characters Bellever, Albon and Baby Tavy will be strolling through the beautiful gardens and grounds.
Bellever is a beautiful Dartmoor giantess, named after Bellever Tor in the heart of the moor. She is about three metres high and dresses in moorland colours. She can dance, play the tambourine and shake hands.
Albon is just over three metres high and clothed in the colours of the sea and is not as pretty as Bellever. Baby Tavy is just over two years old and is toddling now!
Michael Jecks will be telling traditional stories in two half-hour sessions outside the castle. Folktales, fairytales, myths and legends and maybe a few local stories as well.
Passing Showers the clown will be running his circus skills workshops throughout the weekend with demonstrations and shows each day. Children and parents can have a go at plate spinning, juggling and stilt walking.
Medieval archers, the Wolfshead Bowmen will be encamping in the grounds for the weekend. There will be archery displays, archery speed shooting contests and daily ?have a go archery? sessions for visitors, £1 per go.
The Wolfshead Bowmen are one of England?s premier medieval societies. They are a company of archers united in common allegiance to the longbow, the backbone of the English armies during much of the medieval period.
The company comprises authentically-costumed archers (men, women and children) who demonstrate the ancient art of ?shooting in the bow?.
Their aim is to recreate aspects of medieval life, including an encampment, with tents and a controlled, off-the-ground cooking fire; period music; combat with various weapons.
Okehampton Fencing Club will be putting on hour-long demonstrations followed by ?Have a go? sessions on Sunday only.
There will be many craft stalls (under cover in a marquee) selling a wide range of goods including jewellery, jams, preserves, books, plants, and textiles.
Other attractions include 1920s swing boats, and children?s side shows.
Normal admission charges apply and there are small charges for some of the children?s entertainment and activities.
