CALLINGTON has now officially earned its 'Fairtrade Town' status, thanks to the efforts of a local group who have worked to promote a better deal for farmers in the Third World. At Callington Town Council last week, a steering group, who have lobbied support from businesses and organisations in Callington to promote Fairtrade products such as tea and coffee, presented the Portreeve of Callington with a certificate in recognition of the town's new Fairtrade status. Jane Murray, the chairman of the town's Fairtrade steering group, said: 'You can help make the world a fairer place. It's simple, by buying Fairtrade produce the farmers get a fair price and their villages receive a social premium which could mean the difference between clean water or dirty water, life or death.' In Callington the steering group, which started in October 2006, works together with local traders, the town council and schools, to reinforce the Fairtrade message. Between February 23 and March 8, Fairtrade fortnight, campaigners nationwide will be spreading the message in the town. There is Fairtrade artwork around town, researched and painted by local primary school children. Pupils from Callington, Calstock and St Dominic primary schools will be out to tempt visitors to a bar of Fairtrade chocolate, bananas, coffee, tea, wine, cakes, biscuits, clothes, and gifts. People can also pop into Callington library to find out more about Fairtrade and join the nationwide campaign. The group meets once a month in Callington and if you would like to help or adopt Fairtrade products contact Jane on 01579 382785 or go to http://www.fairtrade-callington.org.uk">www.fairtrade-callington.org.uk
