MAY I, through your paper, say how disgusted I am with the highways dept for their lack of gritting over these past weeks spell of snowy, icy weather.
Christmas day we went to fetch my elderly mother from Crelake Close, Tavistock, to take her out for a pre-booked Christmas lunch. When we drove to the top of Whitchurch Road, the road down to Crelake Close had been closed and coned off by the police. Rightly so as it was thick with ice.
The weather had been extreme all week, so surely before the Christmas break that road should have been heavily gritted. There are a lot of elderly residents at Crelake, and had there been an emergency, how would an ambulance have driven down there? We tried the approach from Battery Lane, that again was icy, as were all the pavements along Crelake. There was no way an elderly lady of 88 could walk on that, so my mother spent a miserable Christmas Day alone as we could not reach her.
