STUDENTS in Year 10 (aged 14/15) at local schools are all expected to spend a week or two during the summer term gaining experience of the world of work. Work experience week takes place for Tavistock College students between July 10 and 14 and for Okehampton College students in the two weeks July 3 to 14. Alistair Hodgson, work experience co-ordinator at Okehampton College, said: ?This is an invaluable opportunity for students to try out working in a field that interests them. Finding placements themselves commits students to the placement and the feedback we get from employers is often very positive.? Students have already started trying to find placements, and this involves contacting local employers and even some further afield too. Work experience co-ordinator at Tavistock College, Nick Davies said: ?Although next July seems a long way away now, there is a lot of competition for places in some fields and the sooner students can identify work placements the better. ?All placements need to have adequate insurance and health and safety precautions in place and these are checked by either Devon or Tamar Education Business Partnership.? Given the numbers of students involved, most local businesses can expect to be approached by students. If for any reason your business has not been asked to take a student and you would be interested in showing someone what your business is like, contact either Nick Davies at Tavistock College (01822 618778) or Alistair Hodgson at Okehampton College (01837 650910).
