A WEST Devon teenager will be standing on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square dressed as a pea pod next Monday, September 21.

Eve Atkinson will take her turn from 8pm to 9pm and will be one of 2,400 spending an hour on the plinth.

More than 33,000 people applied to become a 'plinther' as part of the 'One and Other' live artwork project by sculptor Antony Gormley, who over the summer has attempted to create a representation of the whole of humanity via the living monument.

Eve decided to apply after seeing a television programme about the project.

She said: 'I don't usually win things so I had forgotten all about it as it took a while for them to get back to me.'

She said she was over the moon and delighted to have been chosen.

Eve, a sixth-former at Tavistock College, said the idea of dressing as a pea pod came about when she discovered that the United Nation's National Day of Peace was celebrated on that day.

'The aim of the day is to encourage a 24-hour global ceasefire, personal or political, so I'm hoping to "give peas a chance" and for the world to shoot peas, not bullets during my time on the plinth,' Eve said.

It was Eve's mother who was the inspiration for the peas idea, which quickly took root and grew and flourished.

Together they have spent many long hours making the costume and Eve said she hoped to 'sow the seeds of peas' over the crowd.

She will have 'give peas a chance' as a banner and is considering having some posters with slogans including peas.

'I wanted to do something different,' Eve said.

'I don't want to be talking on the phone all the time like some people have been.'
