CALLINGTON Community College has been awarded funding from the European Union for an exciting new Student Voice European Erasmus+ Project.
This is an innovative project on active citizenship and democracy in schools. The project will involve six partners across Europe, including schools and organisations in Lithuania, Spain, London and Italy. Callington is leading the project, called SPACE (Schools Promoting Active Citizenship in Europe).
A new student group of Year 9s has been put together by Ms Kemp and Ms Masters to take a lead on this project. These students will be participating in the project over the next two years and will be developing a system that promotes an effective student voice in schools and encourages young people to get more involved in the democratic process at all levels.
The first partnership meeting was held at the college at the end of November where students and staff met the partners from the various countries to start work on the project.
As well as getting to know each other, project partners presented information about their local area and how student councils work in their situation. Callington students presented information about Cornwall and also how they felt about being European citizens.
Project partners also had the opportunity to look around the college and see a performance by the boys’ dance group. Partners will now be working on the project in their own schools and organisations so that they can share ideas with each other via the internet before the next partnership meeting. For many of the project partners, this was their first time in Cornwall, so they also had the opportunity to try out some local foods.
