Carlsberg South West Peninsula Division One East
Ottery St Mary 0
Okehampton Argyle 3
ARGYLE ended their season on a high note with a convincing victory over bottom club Ottery. They dominated the match for long periods and passed the ball around well for much of the game often building good moves from the back.
Midfielder George Pitts played in the unaccustomed position of sweeper, where he had an excellent game, and Dan Gibbs, Darren Prouse and man of the match Rob Clarke all stepped up from the reserves and slotted into the team well.
Okehampton dominated the early exchanges and opened up the Ottery defence with some lovely passing movements. They took the lead after five minutes when Colin Marshall's beautifully flighted free kick was headed past his own keeper by Ottery defender Nick Searle.
Argyle continued to dominate with Dan Gibbs winning the ball strongly in midfield and Rob Clarke always threatening with runs at the home defence from deep positions.
Darren Prouse and Robbie Miller were proving a handful for the home defence and Argyle went close on several occasions.
A lapse of concentration after 25 minutes almost caught them out however when a poor clearance allowed Ottery to push forward into the Argyle box and win a penalty.
Manager Stuart Cann, who had to turn out in goal once again, brilliantly dived to his left to push the spot kick away and keep Argyle's lead intact. Back came Argyle and on 37 minutes the home defence failed to clear a corner and Stuart Entwhistle stepped up to crash the ball home from close range.
The second half started with Okehampton passing well and it seemed only a matter of time before they would increase their lead.
Several chances went begging but Argyle were given a wake-up call, when in a rare Ottery attack, one of their forwards broke through only for Cann to make an excellent stop.
The win was sealed 38 minutes after the break when a neat interchange of passes between Steve Williams and Stuart Entwhistle completely opened up the Ottery defence leaving Entwhistle to shoot past the keeper from close range.
Argyle continued to press forward and should have added to the score with substitute Graham Sage using his speed to get behind the Ottery defence and coming close on two occasions and Stuart Entwhistle only inches away from completing his hat-trick.
This result sees Argyle finish in 14th place of the 17 team league and looking forward to their third season at this level.
• On Saturday in the Devon and Exeter senior five Okehampton Reserves are away to Sidbury Utd Res, kick-off 3pm.
