A WEST Devon girl is celebrating after being elected to the UK Youth Parliament.

Bere Alston?s Eleanor Whitmore, who attends Tavistock College, is the new Deputy MYP for the Torridge, North and West Devon constituency.

More than 14,200 votes were cast by young people across the county in 41 venues, including schools and youth centres.

The results for the three Devon seats were announced in a ceremony in Exeter on January 25, and Eleanor?s one-year term of office began on February 1.

Thirteen-year-old Eleanor said she was delighted to be chosen to represent the views of young people in West Devon.

?I was really pleased when the result was read out and pretty relieved because I had been wound up about it for a couple of weeks,? she said.

?All the new MYPs met up on Monday to get to know each other and that was very interesting.?

She was one of five youngsters aged 11 to 18 who stood as candidates for the vast constituency, including Nik Reed from Braunton who was elected as the MYP.

Eleanor?s duties will include attending monthly meetings with the other MYPs for Devon, as well as regional meetings.

Members represent the interests of all young people in their areas, and do not stand as representatives of political parties.
