Wellington 16

Tavistock 13

TAVISTOCK travelled to Wellington on Saturday with high hopes of getting the league result they desperately needed, but for the third year in a row a late penalty goal denied them and they came away empty handed.

Tavistock started well and put the pressure on their hosts, but against the run of play Wellington took the lead with a penalty goal from Matt Parsons. After missing a couple of kicks of their own Tavistock got back on level terms with a penalty goal of their own from David Goodspeed.

Wellington went further ahead with a try from Lloyd Wilcox converted by Parsons. As the half came to a close Parsons pushed Wellington further ahead to 13–3 with a second penalty.

At half-time Wellington must have thought they were on their way to a comfortable victory. But Tavistock put together a second half fightback which almost clinched the game.

It was led by the Tavistock forwards who combined well to provide the side's most effective attacking source. Soon after the restart Jude Rotton, on as a half-time replacement for Andrew Griffiths, was driven over the Wellington line for a try.

Wellington came back at Tavistock and should have extended their lead, but missed an easy penalty goal. Then from deep in their own half Duncan Law put fellow flanker Will Brown clear and he raced to the Wellington line from 70 metres to tie the game.

Cruelly, Wellington reclaimed the lead with fewer than five minutes remaining with a third Parsons penalty when Tavistock were penalised at the breakdown.

This Saturday Tavistock entertain Crediton at Sandy Park in the Cornwall and Devon League. Kick off is 3pm.
