. . . when you are a student and an athlete by Charlotte (Year 9)

AT first I thought lockdown would be full of misery and boredom but I have slowly got used to it.

My daily lockdown routine is to get up at normal school time, 7am, and get dressed into my sports clothes.

My sister Hannah and I then do either a run or bike ride before doing an hour’s workout.

Next, we have breakfast and start a long day of school work. We stop at 11am to have a fruit snack before continuing with work.

I enjoy doing English because there are lots of short activities in a booklet, which I like.

I also enjoy doing our PE lessons because even though it is a theory PE lesson, we have to do a HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout. I do PE with Joe Wicks which I find really fun, especially on Friday — Fancy Dress Friday!

Recently, me and my sister have been going out for short bike rides with our Dad around Brentor which is very hilly!

We have almost cracked our best time but our Dad has hurt his leg so we are having to take it easy so he can keep up!

Since lockdown, I have been doing lots of sports because I miss training in the various clubs I go to in Tavistock. I have downloaded an app called ‘Strava’ which records your sporting activities. I really recommend getting it as you can also follow people and see what they are doing sportswise. It is good for keeping in contact with friends as well.

My experience with home school so far has been really good. At first I thought it was really confusing because I had to download lots of apps and sign up to other websites but I am really enjoying getting into a routine and sometimes I think it is the only thing keeping me sane!

My science work can get confusing, though, so it is helpful to have a sister in the same classes as me — we can help each other if we get stuck. She really is my ‘silver lining’ for when I am struggling to cope with lockdown — which is often.

When lockdown is over, I am mostly looking forward to getting back to all of my sports. I have been really missing them as lots of competitions have been cancelled, which means we have free weekends.

Sports take up most of my life which is making me feel a bit lost without them!

Of course I am also looking forward to seeing my friends and getting back to school — hopefully before September!

Stay safe and stay at home, Charlotte.
