AFTER a break of two months due to injury, Tavistock Wheeler Henry Foxhall continued his season of cycle racing on August 12 by taking part in North Devon Wheelers' 25-mile time trial held near Copplestone on the reasonably flat road towards Eggesford.

The sheltered course provided good conditions for the event, in which Henry was the last man to start. Despite being his first time trial since May, he put in a solid performance to set a personal best for the course. The time of 64 minutes 32 seconds took almost five minutes off his previous best set last year.

The event was won by Greg Sandy, of http://www.bikeshop.co.uk">www.bikeshop.co.uk, who arrived at the event unbeaten since early April. This was his 17th win in succession and the time of just over 55 minutes put him well ahead of the rest of the field.

Last weekend, Henry continued his quest to go 'under the hour' for 25 miles when he travelled to Drewsteignton for a time trial on the A38, heading up to Chudleigh Knighton and returning down the other carriageway.

The early start of 7am meant a smaller field than usual with only 36 riders making it. However, an early start meant the event was finished before the wind and the showers arrived.

All competitors arrived back at the headquarters dry with Gary Fouracres, of Camel Valley CC, having the best of the rides finishing in 55.17. Only 28 seconds separated the top three at the end - a closer race than expected.

Henry finished in a time of 1.00.56 - a marked improvement over the previous week, but still not quite under the 60-minute mark. It was, however, his fastest ride ever, with an average speed greater than he has managed to maintain over 10 miles: 24.7 mph.

l If you fancy a gentle social ride, the Wheelers meet every Sunday at 9am. Rides leave from outside the police station in Tavistock's Bedford Square, generally returning around 12.30pm. For more information contact Henry on 01822 832216.
