FIREFIGHTERS from Okehampton were called out to three separate incidents in the early morning of Wednesday last week. One appliance was called out to Waitrose car park in Market Street, Okehampton shortly before 6.30am where a paper bank was on fire. The paperbank was severely damaged by the fire, which the crew used one hose reel to extinguish. The crew then attended a car fire involving a dual-fuelled car on the road through Sampford Courtenay. The alarm was raised shortly before 8am and the Okehampton crew were aided by another appliance from North Tawton. On arriving at the scene, the vehicle was well alight and was severely damaged. Due to the explosive potential of the fuel, the crew cleared the area and made the vehicle safe. They used one hose reel and two breathing apparatus. While returning from this incident, the Okehampton crew came across a road accident at Giblands Cross. It involved two cars, one driven by a man and the other by a woman — both sustained minor injuries. The man had only recently had an operation on his neck, and so was taken to hospital by ambulance, complaining of pain in that part of his body. The crew made the vehicles safe and removed them from the road.
