FOUR former Tavistock College students have combined their varied skills to produce a nationally acclaimed new DVD about breastfeeding. Friends Louise Hunt, Jacquie Bird, Sara Venner and Sarah Brown have all worked on the project, which has been well received across the country. The DVD 'Breastfeeding, by mums, for mums' is being used by health professionals to teach both mothers and other health professionals. The DVD, which was filmed in Cornwall, was the brainchild of mother of three, Louise, who realised there was a gap in the market after having her first son, Joe. Louise said: 'When I had Joe, a lot of my friends, who had also had children, were bottle feeding. I began to realise that although they wanted to breastfeed, they had stopped before they wanted to, often for very similar reasons. 'I saw a film that explained how a baby goes onto the breast — I thought it was brilliant but was horrified at how much it cost. I also began to understand the importance of skin to skin contact between mother and baby in getting breastfeeding off to a good start.' Louise decided to set up her own breastfeeding support group, but knew a self help instructional DVD was something desperately needed. A team was then put together, and the project took off. Jacquie, of ITV Westcountry, brought her editing and TV production skills to the project. Louise said: 'Jacquie was able to gauge the mood of the film perfectly. It is positive, friendly and completely non-medical. 'Many health professionals have commented on how much they love using the film, as it sets breastfeeding as a normal behaviour, going on in everyday life.' Sara designed the artwork for the DVD. She gained her degree in graphic design and has worked in the industry for more than ten years. She now runs her own design business 'Kimono Design' from her home in Tavistock. Sarah Brown, a marketing consultant, appeared in the film and helped with the marketing. After the DVD was shown at a South West Breastfeeding Forum for health professionals, two health authorities made orders, and over the past few weeks another Primary Care Trust had made a considerable order. The national breastfeeding charities La Leche League and the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers are also now stocking the DVD. Copies of the DVD are available from http://www.realbabymilk.org">www.realbabymilk.org for £6.
