THE next meeting of the Okehampton Local History Society will be on Wednesday June 13, when Cynthia Gaskell-Brown will be speaking about Drake?s drum and the Drake flags, which are in the National Trust property Buckland Abbey. Cynthia is an archaeologist and historian, who has researched Buckland Abbey and has in the past been deputy director of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery. At its May meeting, the society enjoyed hearing Mike Paget talk about the Throwleigh Archives, an ongoing project to collect documents, oral history and photographs of the village. The Okehampton search and rescue charity RAPID UK very kindly lent the group a projector for the evening, and a collection was made for them to show the group?s appreciation. The history society meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ockment Hall. New members are always welcome. Anyone interested in learning more should contact the secretary, Malcolm Francis-Lang, on 01837 840158.
