children at Lamerton School welcomed a special visitor last week.

The primary played host to Mary Namuyingo, the headteacher of Kibanyi School from Lamerton's link school in Uganda — the two schools are linked through the 'Food for Thought' project, which links schools' gardens .?Money raised at Lamerton goes towards the vital school garden at Kibanyi.

Headteacher at Lamerton Melody Nicholls said: 'The focus for the visit was food, a comparison of the two countries — how it is grown, produced, harvested, cooked and eaten.

'Mary has been very interested in the crops we grow, how we make compost and enrich the soil, the sale of food for example in supermarkets, market stalls, school dinners and trying different foods.

'She spent some time at Lamerton and she will be visiting the Eden Project and a small market garden in Bere Alston that uses organic methods.'

Lamerton Primary received a grant from the Global Schools Partnerships to encourage understanding between the two different cultures.

Mary has also been interested in how the school teaches, and discussed with staff about play activities and learning through play. She was impressed with standards at Lamerton in reading and mathematics and remarked how well class one children read and class two children knew their times tables. Picture by James Bird
