DON'T dispose of your red, white and blue bunting just yet — it's in demand by the organisers of RAF Harrowbeer's 70th anniversary celebrations later this year.

Anyone with union flags and bunting from the royal wedding celebrations who no longer has any use for it should get in touch with planning group chairman Michael Hayes on 01822 853679.

This special community event, which is free to enter, is being planned for August 13/14 and will include a vast array of exhibitions, display and attractions, highlights being a Battle of Britain memorial flight, a fly-pass by the Royal Navy Historic Flight, a replica Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft, a military vehicle display and a dog show, sponsored by the Children's Hospice South West.

The event is being held in memory of all the personnel who served at RAF Harrowbeer from 1941 to 1945.

Harrowbeer played a vital role during the war by providing air cover for merchant shipping in the English Channel, watching out for enemy E- boats and U-boats, operational sorties in the Cherbourg area and later escort duties to bombers flying on their missions to and from targets in Europe.

Many people have visited the base since the Harrowbeer Interest Group was formed in 2004, filling in parts of the location's history, but there are still many pieces of the jigsaw missing.

Mr Hayes, who runs the Knightstone Tearooms in what was the old watch office, holds heritage weekends several times a year, in an effort to get more information about Harrowbeer. He is always on the look-out for stories, photos and memorabilia.

The anniversary celebrations are costing £13,500 to put on and any donations would be welcome as 30% of the money is still to be found. Anyone who can help can phone Mr Hayes.
