WITH the football World Cup about to kick off in Brazil this month, Devon and Cornwall Fire and Rescue service are warning the West Devon public of the potentially deadly consequences of drinking and driving. England start their game against Italy at 11pm on Saturday and with many matches starting at midnight, many football fans will be watching those games on television at home or in pubs and enjoying a drink. The fire service has brought out a poster 'Drink drive — don't score an own goal this summer' — as part of its 'The Honest Truth' campaign. This rams home the message that driving with alcohol in the bloodstream has 'consequences that last longer than your hangover'. Scientific proof shows that drinking alcohol affects a person's driving skills as it slows down brain function by up to 30 per cent, causes blurring and loss of peripheral vision and reduces the ability to judge distance and speed. Station manager Robert Carlson told the Times said that the fire brigade was not trying to be a 'killjoy' of putting people off enjoying the football or from drinking responsibly. He said: 'The aim of the "Honest Truth" campaign is to try and make people aware of the risk they are in if they drink the night before and think they can get up the next morning and think they can drive without being affected by alcohol. 'Alcohol stays in your system more longer than people realise. 'When you wake up in the morning after drinking the night before, even if you drink coffee, go running and have a full breakfast, the alcohol is still in your body. 'The only thing thing that will get rid of the alcohol is time.'
