A DEVON man who who was part of the band that played in Okehampton when the town celebrated VE Day 60 years ago this week has asked if anyone still has photographs of the occasion. On May 8, 1945, Frederick, better known as ?Jack?, Bond, was drumming for the second practice camp band which played in Fore Street, Okehampton. Mr Bond, who now lives at Buckland Brewer near Bideford, was stationed at Okehampton Army Camp between 1941 and 1945 and became the drummer in the band which used to go round to villages such as Belstone and play at dances as well as in a number of venues in Okehampton itself. He said that on VE Day the band had played on the back of a long-wheelbase vehicle in Fore Street from 8pm to 2am. Mr Bond said he had very special memories of the celebrations: ?Everyone was very happy, there were thousands of heads in the crowd. Everybody was there, there were all the American and Polish soldiers who had been in Okehampton too,? he recalled. Mr Bond said he was not sure what had happened to a number of the other members of the band, as they had come to Okehampton from up-country and returned after the war. Anyone who may have any photographs of the occasion is asked to contact Mr Bond on 01237 451529.
