PEOPLE in West Devon are being encouraged to consider volunteering to become special police constables as events are held next month as part of a national recruitment drive aiming to put more specials on the street. Devon and Cornwall Constabulary are staging open evenings in Okehampton (March 15) and Tavistock (March 17), each starting at 7.30pm. The Okehampton meeting will take place at the rear entrance of the police station in Baldwin Road, In Tavistock, the venue will be the magistrates? retiring room above the police station. Anyone interested in joining will be able to hear from new recruits to the ranks of the special constabulary who will be on hand to talk about what the job involves, their experiences and why they decided to sign up. Specials are involved in a wide range of frontline police work, which can include foot patrols or policing major events. Full training is provided. Anyone aged over 18 and a half who can commit a minimum of four hours a week is invited to consider volunteering.
