AN exciting day of traditional dance, music and singing for young children has been jointly organised by Okehampton-based arts development organisation Wren Music and Tavistock Lions Club this month. The children's folk festival 'Feet First' is being held at Tavistock College next Saturday, March 15, from 10am to 2pm. This new event is focused at primary school children of eight years and over from West Devon. The morning, from 10am until noon, will consist of a choice of three participatory workshops: folk music, folk dance and singing. A spokesman for Tavistock Lions said: 'Feet First will be a wonderful opportunity for youngsters to learn and experience traditional music, dance and song from these well known musicians.' Youngsters can learn to play music for dancing, and Wren will provide a whole range of instruments for the children to try, or they can bring their own. Children will have the opportunity to participate in traditional dancing and to create their own dances, and the singing workshop will help children find out about their voices and learn some new songs. After lunch, from 12.30pm to 2pm, there will be performances and showcases of the morning work, and all can come together to learn dances to a professional live folk dance band. All of the workshops will be led by professional and experienced musicians and no experience is necessary. Wren has secured the services of some well-known musicians including new generation Devon-based folk artists Nick Wyke and Becki Driscoll who will be leading the folk music workshop. The dance workshop will be led by experienced dance teacher David Daulkner. The singing workshop will be led by Matt Norman and Sarah Owen who are both involved with Wren as community musicians. Places on the workshops are free but booking is essential. To register call Wren on 01837 53754.
