ON a cold, dismal day in Plymouth the rugby never sparked to life in this league match.

North Tawton fielded a much changed side, but unfortunately it was not to be their day. Plympton/Victoria took control from the start with their heavier and more experienced forwards.

Denied possession of the ball North Tawton could only defend and this they did with some excellent tackling from forwards and backs alike, led by Martin Friggins and Dave Quick for the backs and Gary Denis for the forwards.

But it was never going to be enough. The well-drilled Plymouth side slowly but surely ran in the tries, so at the break it was no surprise that North Tawton found themselves 50-0 down.

After the interval North Tawton began to turn the game around with No 8 Kevin Avery linking well with scrum half Martin Friggins to get the ball away and give the three quarters a run.

Evergreen Dave Quick at outside half battled well, with centre Simon Fear full of enthusiasm — it looked as if the visitors might pull a couple of tries back and with newcomer Rob MacBain working hard it always looked a possibility. But it was not to be, and the home side ran in some more tries for a convincing victory.

Neil Peters, captain and nominated man of the match by the opposition, can again take away from this match the commitment of this North Tawton side.

North Tawton are away to South Molton II this Saturday in a friendly, kick-off 2.30pm.
