Columbines 4 Plymouth University 6 THIS was a disappointing result in the Columbines? first match of the hockey league this season, but the University fielded a good team and it was end to end play which made it exciting to watch. Okehampton scored first, early in the match, when Jess Miller beautifully set up Jo Stephens who finished well. But the University were young and quick and their pace caused problems for the Okehampton defence. Plymouth soon equalised, but were lucky to be 3-1 up at half-time. after a shot was cruelly deflected off an Okehampton stick past their goalkeeper. Jo Moppett scored early in the second half and for a while it looked as though Okehampton could make a comeback, as they continually pressed forward. Alex Collins worked hard in the centre of the pitch to keep the Plymouth attack at bay, as did Sarah Toms at right half. But despite the gallant efforts of stand-in goalkeeper Carol Taylor, the Columbines conceded another goal to make it difficult to get anything out of the game. They pushed players forward but this left them open at the back and despite two goals from Viv Weatherington there was no way back for Okehampton. Next week Okehampton are at home to Mannamead.
