WITH reference to the continued 'enhancement' of the St James area of Okehampton:
I note with interest the comments from Cllr Marsh that people are busy behind the scenes deciding what the town wants — in this case a £14,000 sculpture and £50,000 spent on a play area in a location that is not easily accessible to the majority of the town's children — children who will remain without play space for the foreseeable future.
The greatest benefit that will come from the community planning emerging from the big top public consultation day should be that we see an end to a handful of people dictating (from behind closed doors) what the town wants.
The big top was positively heaving with good ideas for the town and area. Most need funding. I don't recall being asked if £14000 of Waitrose money should be spent on this sculpture — does anyone else?
Did the town council or anyone else make an attempt to ask the people who live here about it?
