A WEST Devon couple were treated to a surprise meal to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.

Mike and Margaret Maker (pictured right), who have lived in the same house in Whitchurch for all 60 years of their married life, celebrated their anniversary with their two sons Nicholas and Philip and daughters-in-law Elizabeth and Yvonne with a lunchtime meal at Tavistock's Bedford Hotel.

Margaret, 81, said she met Mike, 83, and originally from Horrabridge, on the train: 'We met on the train from Whitchurch to Tavistock. There was a group of several boys from Horrabridge and two or three of us girls from Whitchurch. We kept seeing each other and it went from there.'

The couple were married at St Andrew's Church in Whitchurch.

Margaret said: 'There was a real blizzard that day, someone gave me a stole to wear and we had to clear a path through the snow to get up to the church.'

Mr Maker used to work as a motor mechanic at Carr's Garage, Lamerton, and Mrs Maker started as a shorthand typist at the electricity board but moved on to working at the library where she stayed for 16 years.

The couple have four grandchildren.
