Devon?s top professionals have triumphed against the odds against arch rivals, Cornwall, at a wet and windy Bowood Park Golf Club.
The Devon team, led by Yelverton professional, Tim McSherry, won by six games to four after the morning foursomes were cancelled due to appalling weather conditions.
With ten singles matches to be played, Devon?s top professional Barry Austin started what turned out to be a thrilling day?s golf with a resounding 2 and 1 win over Richard Sadler, the former US Tour player. With wins coming from Neil Holman and Robin Goodey, Devon raced into a 3-0 lead before Cornwall fought back with four wins from the next five games.
This fight back, led by British Club Pro Champion Tony Nash, left the match finely balanced with Devon needing to win the remaining two games to snatch a glorious victory.
Torquay professionals Stuart Disney and Cliff Strange both won their matches by 4 and 3 margins to allow the celebrations to follow for Devon.
