YELVERTON Golf Club ladies' first team's inter-county match was held at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club in Somerset from May 13 to 15.

The weather tested the players' stamina and ability, especially on the first day, with gale-force winds and driving rain.

Somerset were the winners and Devon were a creditable second — they lost to Somerset 6 1/2 to 2 1/2, won against Cornwall 5-4 and won against Dorset 5-4.

Yelverton Golf Club had two ladies playing in the Devon team; Laura Eastwood and Gilly Jarvis.

Laura played in the three morning foursomes matches with Keiley Clark (Teignmouth). They halved with Somerset and won against Cornwall and Dorset.

In the singles Laura narrowly lost to Bev New of Somerset, an experienced player who was previously off +2 handicap.

Laura lost to Cornwall but had a 7/6 win over Dorset.

Gilly Jarvis played in the foursomes with Jenny Roberts of Thurslestone against Somerset, but they were beaten, as in the match with Jill Whitehead (Exeter) against Dorset.

She had an excellent victory in the singles against Cornwall, which she won by 4-3.

The standard of golf was very high, even the weather did not beat any of them.

l Yelverton Ladies' golf section's spring mixed open was held on Sunday May 19.

The Phylis Easlick Trophy for ladies was won by Joyce Martin, 39 points.
