A YELVERTON Golf Club member has earned her county colours having played 12 times this year for Devon's first team.
Gilly Jarvis (nee Postema) was born in South Africa and had an English mother from Churston, Devon and Dutch father from near Amsterdam.
Gilly enjoys all sports and lived a colonial life with her parents and brother in Rhodesia, Malawi and Botswana before coming to England in 1976, aged 13, to complete her education. Her mother, also known as Gilly, was a successful South African international golfer in the 1950s and 1960s.
Gilly and her brother Willem were brought up on golf courses around Southern Africa and her mother taught both children how to play golf. She has now reduced her handicap from five to three with the help of local golf professional, Laura Eastwood.
Gilly's main golfing achievements include: Oxfordshire girls golf champion in 1976 and 1977; held the ladies course record at Yelverton Golf Club in 1997 and 2002, part of the Yelverton Golf Club Still Cup winning team in 2000; runner up in the Devon County championships in 2006; won the Yelverton Ladies Club championships scratch trophy nine times and won the Willes Little ladies' county foursomes in 2008 with Sue Pearman.
