A RARE opportunity to take part in an archaeological dig to help find an iron age settlement near to the Calstock Roman Fort is being offered to local residents for free.
This exciting chance of a week's archaeology, which would normally cost in the region of £250, is up for grabs thanks to a Heritage Lottery grant of £35,000 to the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The grant was announced at the end of last year but October dates have now been set for the much anticipated dig, which could piece together sections of Calstock's rich and fascinating history.
Dr Chris Smart of the University of Exeter will be leading a team of professional field archaeologists to teach volunteers how to excavate, record and interpret archaeology and artefacts.
The Calstock Parish Heritage Project will also be conducting a geophysical survey to look for archaeology below the ground at the National Trust's Cotehele Estate, as part of the Festival of British Archaeology, and people are welcome to go along and get involved between July 23 and 26.
Project leader Eloise Kane said: 'We're very excited to be able to offer free places for people to get involved in real archaeology.
'It's a great opportunity to learn practical skills as well as discover new information about the history and development of the parish.'
Booking is essential for taking part in the dig or geophysics.
