l Continued from page 1 represent a severe and adverse intrusion into the landscape. The effect would not only be harmful to the landscape itself but also the public's enjoyment of the National Park within the context of its surroundings.' Geoffrey Cox, MP for West Devon and Torridge, was 'delighted' with the outcome and congratulated those who had fought the scheme. In June, the MP gave evidence to the public inquiry, spelling out his belief turbines would have an adverse social, economic, and visual impact outweighing any potential benefits they would bring to the West Devon area. Mr Cox said: 'I continue to believe that the construction of massive and relatively inefficient wind turbines in areas so dependent on the quality of the landscape for their economic prosperity is the wrong way to encourage greater production and use of renewable energy. 'I think the decision not to build the three turbines of this size and scale at Yelland Farm is absolutely right, and I pay tribute to the individuals and communities who worked so hard to defend the rural landscape of Dartmoor.' At the inquiry, Dartmoor Preservation Association shared a barrister with the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, the Manor House and Ashbury Hotels, all of whom had supported West Devon Borough Council in defending its original decision to refuse the proposal. West Coast Energy expressed extreme disappointment with the inquiry decision. The company said they felt they had demonstrated that the visual impact of three turbines near Dartmoor would be 'very limited'. Gerry Jewson, managing director of West Coast Energy, said: 'The inspector's decision appears to attach limited weight to the statutory targets for renewable energy generation in Devon and the Government's commitment to climate change. 'I felt that we had selected an appropriate location in Devon for renewable energy generation and given the environmental imperative and the need to provide for secure and diverse forms of energy for the UK — the planning system has clearly not yet adjusted to the urgent tasks ahead of us.'
