KELLY College swim squad team competed in the City of Plymouth Championships and came back with a collection of hard-won medals and trophies. Kelly swimmers won 14 BAGCAT (British Age Group Categories) trophies, where scores are accrued across several different strokes.
Chloe Barrow, aged 11, had a first place in the BAGCATS, and was invited to a presentation ceremony at the Lord Mayor's Parlour in Plymouth.
This year, the City of Plymouth ASA committee decided to award a new perpetual challenge trophy for the 100m champion in each of the strokes. The new 100m individual medley event trophy has been dedicated to Archie Brew, lead coach of the Kelly College county squad (pictured above with the squad).
This was decided due to Archie's many years of involvement in swimming, including 21 years of international coaching. He spent four years as a senior swim coach to the Scottish team and was Scottish Commonwealth Games Coach in Edinburgh 1986 and English Commonwealth Games coach in Auckland 1990. He was a coach for Great Britain at the European Championships in Bonn, 1992 and a senior swim coach to the English Schools international teams for 10 years, including the World Schools Championships in 1998. During his time as director of swimming at Kelly College, Archie helped to produce more than 50 international swimmers and 12 Olympians, including Sharron Davies and his own two sons, Robin Brew (Los Angeles, 1984, where he set an Olympic Record in the heats of the 200m individual medley) and Paul Brew (Seoul, 1988).
In 2002, Robin took over from his father as director of swimming at Kelly College, but Archie has continued to coach on a part-time basis at Kelly. As a coach, he is respected the world over, with his unique style of coaching, attention to technical detail and a great love of the sport.
He has a great ability to see quickly the main fault that prevents a swimmer going faster and has the experience to be able to correct this fault. Archie has a very special way with people and harbours a real talent for bringing out the very best performances with individuals or teams.
