A WHITCHURCH resident who has campaigned against the controversial rural gateway this week slammed the partnership committee's decision as 'a travesty of local democracy'.

Ian Kilpatrick has written and received hundreds of letters and e-mails in his fight to get the rural gateway section of Whitchurch Road reinstated.

Mr Kilpatrick, who attended the meeting and sent files of letters objecting to the gateway to members, said: 'It struck me that nobody had bothered to look at any of the complaints.

'Five local councillors spoke against that report — but only two of them had voting rights.'

Mr Kilpatrick said most people who have contacted him are concerned about safety for drivers, walkers and riders through the gateway, especially at night.

He said he knew of eight accidents which have occurred within the gateway — but they are not included in the monitoring report because no-one had been injured.

And he was particularly cross the chairman of Dartmoor National Park had not criticised the scheme he described as 'an environmental mess' on the Park's border.

But Mr Kilpatrick is determined not to give up fighting against the scheme.

'This is just the start. They might have won the battle but they certainly haven't won the war,' he said.
