WEST Devon and Torridge MP John Burnett and his wife, Billie, were among those at Tavistock Methodist church hall on Friday for the winding up of the area Jubilee 2000 Campaign.
Mr Burnett was presented with three dolls made out of plastic bags and which were among many to decorate the town hall as part of the campaign events.
Other activities included a 25-hour fast and vigil in Tavistock Church, and a summit watch vigil on Brent Tor.
The evening also saw a cookery demonstration by Susie Peach, who cooked doughnuts. Everyone at the meeting, to remind them of basic human need and greed, ate one — in Tanzania the average annual income of £155 is less than the cost of three doughnuts a day in Britain. In Britain, the average annual income is £15,906, more than the cost of 300 doughnuts a day.
Mr Burnett congratulated the local group on its efforts over the last three years and gave his continuing support for the cancellation of Third World debt.
Gill Gorbutt, who chaired the final meeting, thanked all who had worked tirelessly in organising the events and keeping the issue alive in Tavistock, particularly Elizabeth Turner and Kit Harbottle.
Kit reminded everyone that although Jubilee 200 had ended it was handing over the campaign to Drop the Debt, Jubilee Plus and many charities.
During the campaign, a third of the debt owed by the world's poorest countries was cancelled.
The Rev Jeff Moles, Minister of Tavistock Methodist Church, closed the meeting with prayers of hope.
