A pioneering orthopaedic surgeon from Crapstone has died aged 89. Michael Salz, who became Plymouth?s second ever orthopaedic surgeon when he was appointed in 1948, left Breslau, Germany, to study medicine at Cambridge before qualifying as a Bachelor of Medicine in 1940. He lived in Exeter during the war where he met his wife Veronica, with whom he had two children, Anthony and Joanna. Maher Halawa, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Derriford Hospital said of him: ?He was a fine surgeon who had never failed to keep up to date with new techniques until very recently. ?He established friendships with many leaders of orthopaedic surgery in the country and throughout the world.? Appointed President of the Plymouth Medical Society in 1977, Michael Salz was also a founding member of the Rheumatoid Arthritis Surgical Society (RASS) for which he served as secretary for many years. He loved to travel and as a keen skier enjoyed taking his grandchildren on ski trips every year. Mr Halawa said: ?He will never be forgotten in the South West and will be greatly missed.?
