A WEST Devon woman, who became one of the first people in the country to receive a heart and lung transplant at the age of 14, died at the age of just 26 last week.

Pippa Langston, daughter of county councillor Gretta Madigan, of Weir Quay, was born with cystic fibrosis but fought throughout her life to live life normally.

A photograph of her winning a class at a horse show with oxygen cylinders strapped to her pony has been used in lectures throughout the world as an example of courage and determination not to give in.

Mrs Madigan said Pippa herself made the decision to ask for the pioneering transplant.

'She wanted quality of life but she wasn't prepared to sit around and just wait for the transplant. On the day, she was at school and later found out she had come top in the exam she sat that day!' said Mrs Madigan, who said the operation gave Pippa a 'wonderful' opportunity to resume normal life.

Pippa obtained an honours degree in politics at Exeter University and was offered a position in the academic affairs department.

Her love of sport stayed with her as she grew up and she won many medals at European transplant games held in Norway, Belgium and England.

Two years ago, Pippa met her fiancé, Andrew Knox from Yelverton — they were due to be married in May next year.

Mrs Madigan said Pippa's courage was reflected in everything she did.

'When she had to give up riding, her love of animals led her to breed and show cats. As with everything, her determination and ability led to great success and her cottage is filled with awards and rosettes,' she said.

But Pippa faced many hurdles following her transplant — her lungs were damaged by chronic rejection and continued use of steroids caused osteoporosis. Post-transplant lymphoma finally claimed her life.

Mrs Madigan said: 'She endured a great deal but always with a smile on her face.

'Hers is a superb example of positive thinking and positive living. She achieved far more in her 26 years than many others will if they live to be 100.'

Pippa's funeral will be held at Exeter Crematorium on Monday November 12 at 11am.
