ENVIRONMENT Agency staff have agreed to remove a dead cow which had floated down the river and become wedged under a bridge in Gunnislake for a week. Members of the public had become concerned about the possible ?environmental hazard? at Newbridge, especially when children had been spotted throwing stones at it. Local businessman and Calstock councillor Mike Greenwood said he had left messages at Caradon District Council and the Environment Agency in the middle of last week. He said: ?A couple of us reported it but nothing had been done. It is not the sort of thing that should be left there.? Mike Dunning from the Environment Agency said the animal was going to be removed on January 9 but when the site was visited it was clear additional equipment was needed. ?In similar cases the local authority (Caradon District Council) would do this because it poses no danger in terms of river flow and it is downstream from the water abstraction point,? he said. ?However, we have the workforce and the proper equipment to do the job and we are happy to do it. I believe we have acted as promptly as we could.?
